I remember watching the making the video for B's second solo release and how she practiced a backwards somersaults like 20 times in a row so that the next day she could do it well without having to do a lot of retakes. I know you might not like this, but that behavior is a lot more like JK practicing saying "tangled" 20 times and acting on a new vision for his brand despite critics saying they don't want him to drink or curse or show nipple than V who has nothing to rebel against because he's universally praised and accepted as he is, accepted the concept and songs given to him, and isn't trying anything new vocally.
This was an interesting read! I'm not a Beyoncé stan but through reading this realized I respect her more than I thought! I think the assessment of Beyoncé as being a non-people-pleaser is more of a testament to her earned cache after many years of pleasing her Dad. I was a huge Destiny's Child fan and think V is more similar to Latavia and Letoya, the members who were fired, than Beyoncé. Beyoncé notoriously wrote a letter chastising them for not wanting to wake up early to practice for hours, and not wanting to go to all the engagements. Though there were other issues, the crux of the conflict was that B wanted to be a star and go to #1, but similar to V, those members were okay doing the same ol' and wanted to keep things chill (and that's okay).
As a recovering people pleaser I can attest, it never works out! Here’s to being more like Beyoncé 🙌🏽🙏🏽
